ʻOumuamua is a fascinating object! Officially designated 1I/ʻOumuamua, it’s the first known interstellar object detected passing through our Solar System. Discovered on October 19, 2017 by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope in Hawaii, it drew intense interest because it’s not bound to the Sun—it came from outside our Solar System.
In Hawaiian, ʻOumuamua means “scout” or “messenger from afar.”
